Newton made her TV debut at age 4 with a series-regular role on All My Children. “I’ve been auditioning my whole life,” says the actress, who grew up alongside a golf course in Coral Gables, Florida. She reached the next level, however, by playing a string of roles as the onscreen daughters to Reese Witherspoon in Big Little Lies, Frances McDormand in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Leslie Mann in Blockers and Julia Roberts in Ben Is Back. Upcoming for Newton: Legendary’s Detective Pikachu and Netflix’s female-led Lord of the Flies-esque drama series.
IF I WEREN’T AN ACTOR, I WOULD BE … “A professional golfer.”
I HOPE I DON’T GET TYPECAST AS … “The ‘blond girl’ in high school. I actually see myself as quite a poodle, but I’m always cast as these grungy characters.”
TRUE STORY I’D LOVE TO SEE MADE INTO A MOVIE “I find the experience of doing agility with my dog fascinating. I could make a great mumblecore film about it.”
I’D LOVE TO HAVE STARRED IN … Alice in Wonderland
THE PERSON I’M DYING TO WORK WITH “Wes Anderson and Tim Burton. Something kind of characterized.”
The first trailer for Kathryn’s upcoming movie Ben is Back is here and it’s heartbreaking. The movie also stars Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges, amongst others, and is directed by Peter Hedges. Below you can watch the trailer and read the summary for the film.
19 year-old Ben Burns (Lucas Hedges) unexpectedly returns home to his family’s suburban home on Christmas Eve morning. Ben’s mother, Holly (Julia Roberts), is relieved and welcoming but wary of her son staying clean. Over a turbulent 24 hours, new truths are revealed, and a mother’s undying love for her son is tested as she does everything in her power to keep him safe. Ben is Back also stars Courtney B. Vance (“The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”) and Kathryn Newton (Lady Bird).

Kathryn Newton has been tapped to star in a new Netflix drama series written by Chris Keyser (Tyrant, The Last Tycoon) and directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spiderman franchise, 500 Days of Summer).
Described as a modern take on Lord of the Flies, the untitled Chris Keyser drama follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town, left without any trace of their parents. As they struggle to figure out what has happened to them and how to get home, they must establish order and form alliances if they want to survive.
These teens will party, panic, grieve, fight, and ultimately have to decide how to deal with the unthinkable all under the lead of Allie, played by Newton. Allie, is at the center of leading this mysterious teenage world although always living in her older sister, Kim’s shadow. Allie inspires her sister to take charge of the group and supports her during the ensuing confrontation.
Webb and Keyser are set as executive producers. Production is set to get underway in September outside of Boston.
